Role of the Sound Mixer:
A sound mixer is the member of a film crew responsible for recording all sound recording on set during the filmmaking for later inclusion in the finished product, or for reference to be used by the sound designer, sound effects editors, or foley artists. This requires choice and deployment of microphones, choice of recording media, and mixing of audio signals in real time.
The sound mixer is considered a department head, and is thus completely responsible for all aspects of production sound including the hiring of a boom operator and utility sound technician, planning the technical setup involving sound including both sound equipment and ancillary devices involved in syncing and time offsets, anticipating and discussing sound-related problems with the rest of the crew, and ordering and preparing the sound equipment to be used on the set.

These two guys have a tremendous body of work and have yet to bring home the Oscar… so far…

o 1st nomination.
· David Giammarco

This is a solid team; however, I don’t expect them to bring home the Oscar.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: this movie is a turd sandwich and I don’t care how talented this sound team is. Their talents are merely a tiny band-aid on a major problem. When an overall product is this bad, it should be left a long and ignored, so we don’t have to think about it again.
The only thing going for this film is that Greg P. Russell is the Susan Lucci of the Sound Branch… he might get the pity vote. That said, Susan Lucci didn’t win her Emmy until her 19th nomination, so I hope the the Academy is patient and doesn’t give out the Oscar like a consolation prize this year.
· Gary Rydstrom
o 6th nomination for Sound Mixing, 4 wins for ‘Jurassic Park’, ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’, ‘Titanic’, and ‘Saving Private Ryan’. Gary is also nominated for Sound Editing and has previously been nominated for ‘Best Animated Short’.
· Andy Nelson
o 16th nomination, 1 win: ‘Saving Private Ryan’.
· Tom Johnson
o 8th nomination, 2 win: ‘Titanic’ and ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’.
· Stuart Wilson
o 1st nomination.
This is an incredibly talented team… however, I just didn’t enjoy this film very much so it is very hard for me to take it too seriously. And as I said above, an Oscar should be awarded to a technical achievement in a harmonious film… and to be harmonious it should be a successful collaboration on all fronts.

Snubs:
Honestly, not many critics associations honor sound mixing and editing, so it’s hard to evaluate snubs. ‘Tree of Life’ has been nominated, as well as, ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’, ‘The Artist’, and ‘Harry Potter’. But none of these sound teams have been nominated more by more than one organization.

Oscar Trends:
Well, first of all, the teams behind ‘Moneyball’, ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ and ‘Transformers 3’ have not received any nomination from any other outfit…
So, this is really going to come down to ‘Hugo’ and ‘War Horse’. Honestly, I think ‘Hugo’ is going into the Oscars with a lot more momentum, and it’s a much better film.
