84th Academy Awards – ‘Best Sound Editing’

Role of the Sound Editor:
A sound editor is a creative professional responsible for selecting and assembling sound recordings in preparation for the final sound mixing or mastering of a motion picture.  Sound editing developed out of the need to fix the incomplete, undramatic, or technically inferior sound recordings of early talkies, and over the decades has become a respected filmmaking craft, with sound editors implementing the aesthetic goals of motion picture sound design.

Snubs:
This award pretty much falls in line with ‘Sound Mixing’.  In fact, most awards combine these two categories together treating Mixing and Editing as a team honor… so… there isn’t really much to say here.

Oscar Trends:
First of all, in the last 30 years, only 3 films have won Best Sound Editing without also being nominated for Best Sound Mixing… Plus, in the 13 years the Satellite Award for Sound has been given out, their winner has only gone on to win the Oscar 3 times.   So based on statistics alone, I wouldn’t give much stock to ‘Drive’.

In addition, in the last 26 years, only 7 films have won Best Sound Editing without also being nominated for the British Academy Award… which leaves ‘Hugo’ and ‘War Horse’ with the best chances.

It would also be easy to give ‘Hugo’ the edge on this one just because I’ve picked it to win Sound Mixing… however, in the last 30 years, only 13 films have one both Mixing and Editing… granted… two of them have been in the last two years… so… it could be a new trend… and I might just have to stick to this trend…
