3 for 3 going
into this year baby! Oh yeah!
For a complete
look at eligibility and voting procedures, please take a look at last year’s
post: 84th Academy
Awards – Best Actress.
**********
Nominations:
·
Jessica Chastain – Zero Dark Thirty
o
2nd nomination.
Previously nominated for The Help.
I
don’t know. I realize she’s won the
Golden Globe (Drama), however, this isn’t the best performance in her short,
yet prolific career. Chastain is a
talent and she will be around for quite some time.
Chastain
has won the Golden Globe (Drama), Broadcast Film Critics Association Award, Chicago
Film Critics Award, Dallas-Fort Worth Critics Association Award, Florida Film
Critics Circle Award, National Board of Review Award, Online Film Critics Society
Awards, Vancouver Film Critics Circle Award, and the Washington DC Area Film
ritics Association Award.
·
Jennifer Lawrence – Silver Linings Playbook
o
2nd nomination.
Previously nominated for Winter’s Bone.
I
would really like to see Lawrence win.
She was amazing, especially when you compare it to her work in Winter’s
Bone and The Hunger Games. And
speaking of The Hunger Games… the fact that Lawrence was part of the
biggest film of the year could really help her take the Oscar.
Won
the Golden Globe (Comedy), Screen Actors Guild Award, Austin Film Critics
Association Award, Broadcast Film Critics Association Award (Comedy), Central
Ohio Film Critics Association Award, Kansas City Film Critics Circle Award, Las
Vegas Film Critics Society Award, Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award,
Satellite Award, and Southeastern Film Critics Association Award.
·
Emmanuelle Riva – Amour
o
1st nomination.
Riva
is a total possibility here. I haven’t
seen the film yet, so I don’t really have an opinion… but based on her wins so
far this year… she is a contender.
Riva
has won the BAFTA Award, Boston Society of Film Critics Award, Los Angeles Film
Critics Association Award (tied with Jennifer Lawrence), National Society of
Film Critics Award, and the San Francisco Film Critics Award.
·
Quvenzhane Wallis – Beasts of the Southern Wild
o
1st nomination.
Okay. Beasts of the Southern Wild was
good. But I am still not sure why a 9
year old (who was cast when she was 5) is nominated for best actress. Is it cute that she’s been nominated? Totally.
And don’t get me wrong. She was
good… but… I don’t know…
Wallis
has already won the Austin Film Critics Association Award for ‘Breakthrough
Artist’, Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for ‘Best Young Actor/Actress’,
the Capri Hollywood Award for ‘Best Actress’, Chicago Film Critics Association
Award for ‘Most Promising Performer’, Florida Film Critics Award for ‘Breakout
Star’, Hollywood Film Festival Award for ‘New Star’, Phoenix Film Critics
Society Award for ‘Youth in a Lead or Supporting Role’, Satellite Award for ‘Outstanding
New Talent’, and the Washington DC Area Film Critics Association for ‘Youth
Performance’.
·
Naomi Watts – The Impossible
o
2nd nomination.
Previously nominated for 21 Grams.
Naomi Watts was simply amazing!
As was the rest of the cast of The Impossible, which is hands down
my favorite movie of the year. And since
this is their only nomination I am really rooting for Watts. However, a win here is pretty unlikely… Watts
has won the Palm Springs International Film Festival Award for Best Actress,
however… I just don’t really see her as a leading character in this film… sure
she had top billing along with Ewan McGregor, but everyone was a supporting
character… and I think she could have fared better in the Supporting
Character. However, the producers
probably wanted to keep her away from Anne Hathaway, who already has the lock
on that category.
**********
My Two Cents:
So… Jennifer Lawrence is the only nominee who appears on my Top 5
list of the year… so… well… I think I’m going to go all in.
That said… 13 of the last 18 winners of the Screen Actors Guild
Award have also won the Oscar… so I don’t think I am too far off.

Prediction:
1. Jennifer Lawrence – Silver
Linings Playbook
2. Emmanuelle Riva - Amour
3. Jessica Chastain – Zero
Dark Thirty
4. Quvenzhane Wallis – Beasts
of the Southern Wild
5. Naomi Watts – The
Impossible
