This category
has not been kind to me. Every year I am
very confident, as I am this year, however, I am only 1 for 3 for Foreign
Films!
For a complete look at eligibility and voting procedures, please take a
look at last year’s post: 84th Academy Awards – Best Foreign Film.
**********
Nominations:
·
Amour
o
Austria – 4th nomination, 1 win.
It
is not abnormal to see a Foreign Film nominated in other categories, but Amour
is nominated for 5 total, including Best Direction, Best Leading Actress, Best
Original Screenplay and BEST PICTURE.
This
film has already won 26 awards including the BAFTA awards for Best Foreign Film
and Best Actress.
I’m
not going to go into a ton of detail… this category is pretty locked up.
·
Kon-Tiki
o
Norway – 5th nomination, 0 wins
Won
“Directors to Watch” award at the Palm Springs Film Festival.
·
No
o
Chile – 1st nomination.
Won
the Sao Paulo International and named one of the Top 5 Foreign Films of the
year by the National Board of Review.
·
A Royal Affair
o
Denmark – 9th nomination, 3 wins.
Won
best Actor and Screenplay at the Berlin International Film Festival, the
Philadelphia Film Festivals Audience Award (Honorable Mention), and best
Costume Design at the Satellite Awards.
·
War Witch
o
Canada – 8th nomination, 1 win.
Won
Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival, the Cambridge Film
Festival, Camerimage, 2 Tribeca Film Festival Awards, 3 Vancouver Film Critics
Circle Award, and was named one of the Top 5 Foreign Films of the year by the
National Board of Review.

My Two-Cents:
This is the third time in Oscar history where a movie is nominated
for both Foreign Film and Best Picture.
The previous two, Life is Beautiful and Crouching
Tiger, Hidden Dragon, both walked away with the Oscar for Best Foreign
Film.
Amour should be one of the easiest pick of the night.

Prediction:
1. Amour
2. War Witch
3. A Royal Affair
4. No
5. Kon-Tiki
