I am very proud
to say that I am 3 for 3 in this category.
For a complete
look at eligibility and voting procedures, please take a look at last year’s
post: 84th Academy
Awards – Best Original Score.
**********
Nominations:
·
Anna Karenina
o
Dario Marianelli – 3rd nomination, 1 win for Atonement. Previously nominated for Pride & Prejudice.
Marianelli
is also known for his score of V is for Vendetta and Salmon
Fishing in the Yemen.

·
Argo
o
Alexandre Desplat – 5th nomination. Previously nominated for The Queen, The
Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and The
King’s Speech.
Desplat
has been very busy this year. He also wrote
the score for Zero Dark Thirty and Moonrise Kingdom. For the latter he won the Central Ohio Film
Critics Association Award. However, his
busy schedule isn’t anything new. Last year
he scored The Tree of Life, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close,
and Harry
Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
Also
nominated for the BAFTA Award, Broadcast Film Critics Association Award,
Chicago Film Critics Association Award, Golden Globe, San Diego Film Critics
Society Award, and he has already won the Satellite Award for Argo.
·
Life of Pi
o
Mychael Danna – 1st nomination in this category.
Danna
is also nominated this year for Best Original Song for the same film.
Danna
is also known for scoring Moneyball, Little Miss Sunshine, and
Capote.
Also
nominated for the BAFTA Award, Broadcast Film Critics Association Award, San
Diego Film Critics Society Award, the Phoenix Film Critics Society Award. He has already won the Golden Globe, Las
Vegas Film Critics Society Award, Palm Springs International Film Festival

·
Lincoln
o
John Williams – 43 nomination in this category.
Williams
has also been nominated 5 times for Best Original Song, for a total of 48 nominations,
resulting in only 5 wins: Fiddler
on the Roof, Jaws, Star Wars, E.T.
the Extra-Terrestrial, and Schindler’s List.
John
Williams also holds the distinction of being the most nominated living
person.
Also
nominated for the BAFTA Award, Golden Globe, Phoenix Film Critics Award, and
Washington DC Area Film Critics Association Award; and won the Broadcast Film
Critics Association Award.
·
Skyfall
o
Thomas Newman – 10th nomination in this category.

Women, Unstrung Heroes, American Beauty, Road
to Perdition, Finding Nemo, Lemony Snicket, The
Good German, and WALL-E.

Snubs:
The Master: Jonny Greenwoods score for The Master has won three major critics’
awards and has been nominated to two others.
Legitimately, this composer was snubbed.
He was also snubbed a few years ago for this score of There
Will Be Blood. Where is the love
for Greenwood?
Moonrise Kingdom: I hate giving props to
someone who is already nominated, however, Alexandre Desplat was nominated for
four different critics’ awards for this film.
And since he also scored Zero Dark Thirty he has a real shot
at winning.
Beast of the Southern Wild: Receiving
three nominations from major critics association, first time composers Dan
Romer & Benh Zeitlin could also be considered a legitimate snub… that said…
28 year old Zeitlin did earn nominations for Best Picture, Best Adapted
Screenplay, and Best Director… so that ain’t to shabby.

Oscar Trends:
As much as I think Argo has a shot at winning, statistics are
against it. In the last 16 years, only 5
films who have won the Satellite Award have also won the Oscar. And with The Master out of contention, this
leaves Life of Pi with a lead.
**********
Prediction:
1. Life of Pi
2. Argo
3. Lincoln
4. Skyfall
5. Anna Karenina
